Hassan II Trophy Dar Es Salam GC Rabat Morocco April 11-14, 2017

Morocco Paul Dunne 2017

The European Tour has almost reached Europe now, just a ferry ride across to Spain …

Two of our SA Christians were in the field; Hennie Otto, who is playing on a medical exemption this season which restricts him to 11 starts only, although he gets to choose which events and also our recent Tshwane Open winner, Dean Burmeister ..

With Dean in the Pro-Am, Hennie and I met up and then I got together with Dean separately … Hennie is in the midst of moving house and is deeply involved in his home town of George with the building of an extension to his church which is aimed at accommodating the youth of the town – He is clearly moving in the direction of getting more involved, through the Spirit’s leading, in a ‘full-time’ way with his local church ….

This is Dean’s first full year on the tour and with his win in SA he has a three season exemption so is able to pick and choose his schedule, which when so far from home [and with a new baby] is very handy …He is looking forward to the unknown challenges ahead and relying on God, who better …

The highlight of the week was a long chat at the course with Jason, a caddie I’ve mentioned before, he was saying that’d he’d been home over Christmas in New Zealand for the first time in nine years and the family got together for three ‘unveilings’ – thought I’d stop him there and find out what that was …His Maori tribal traditions take to do with a ‘triangle’ of physical, mental and spiritual and that there is no separation of these and the unveiling on the first year anniversary of a persons death allows their spirit to merge in the ‘triangle’ – they have several gods; nature, sea, land, animals etc … and these lines mustn’t be broken and all must be respected …

Where is Jesus, faith  and the cross in this I asked?  Nowhere apparently, all is a fairy story and at best the bible is flawed! According to Jason …

Psalm 18:30

‘As for God, his way is perfect: The Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him.’

I wonder who is right, Jason or God? It is incredibly sad to see someone who is utterly convinced that they are 100% right when they are 100% wrong …

Proverbs 14:12

There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.

Next event is the Portugal Open, and Faro is an even shorter ferry ride away than Spain …

Johannesburg Open @ Gauteng South Africa February 20-26, 2016

You’ll know the saying that some things come back to bite you, well … my comments that I was being made to go to SA and face sunshine and 30-odd degree temperatures, came back to bite and then some … There was rain, rain, thunderstorms and then more rain … you’ll get the idea; the players were on the course, back, out again times beyond counting ….

These conditions have good and bad points for me; it does mean that we can’t arrange a Bible Study as those who were pre-qualifying missed their intended day, and with the course being unplayable on Monday and Tuesday the players needed to practice as much as they could Wednesday [and this is a two course event] so all is tricky to put it mildly …. The good point; due to rain the players/caddies were in the clubhouse much more than normal so I was able make contact with them coming to me rather me wandering around looking for opportunities …

I was able too meet up 1 – 1 with; Mike Vlismas [media], Alex our new born caddie, Peter Karmis [player and Greek bible scholar] … and there was of course our old friend Reggie who was his usual bullish self with his desire for facts, times and visible proof … reminded me of Titus Ch 3 V 9,
‘But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless.’

Another player I came across for the first time was, Ryan Fox [NZ] whose wife helps out with the survey >>> He was trapped beside me in the shuttle from the course to the hotel and so it was good to chat to him for the 25 minute journey …Also player Rob Dinwiddie with whom I had a similar chat in another shuttle ride, do put them on your prayer list …

You’ll also be aware of the saying that it is a small world, and on Sunday I had the opportunity to do a 10 minute interview on my Logos role at the church of Danny Marshall, whose family belong to my home church High Kirk in Ballymena, here in Joburg then spend the afternoon with him, his wife and new baby daughter and enjoy Sunday lunch with them …

Off to the Tshwane Open this coming week in Pretoria, where I hear the sun may well come out … Lotion at the ready!

Logos on Tour in Austria

I have often mentioned that the less grand events offer more opportunity simply through the lack of the ‘circus’ element that prevails when the big names abound, so attracting the large entourage’s that accompany those occasions  …

So it was here in sun drenched Austria …

It was great to meet up with our Christian caddie and SA player, for an hours chat and study, a most profitable time was had … I also met up with JB Kruger separately … There really is nothing like dwelling in the word of God is there ….

The bus journeys back and forth from the course were equally rewarding with good talks and explanations of what I do on Tour with two players, this week I was asked more times than I can remember of late why I was there, it was good to reiterate my role, although having been here 6 years, you’d think they’d all be aware by now, but this illustrates the transient nature of the ET and just how many ‘new’ players, caddies and others there are on the conveyor belt that is the Tour …

My counterpart in the United States, Pete Hiskey of Links Golf Ministries has exhorted me to get in touch with a player, believer and good friend of his, from China, and I managed to track him down this week and pass on greetings from Pete and let him know what we do on the ET … As with all Orientals, he was the epitome of good manners and delighted to have met up, so it’ll be interesting to see where this leads, perhaps I’ll even expand my two word Chinese vocabulary.

On a sadder note, Hennie Otto, is undergoing back surgery for the umpteenth time and is now out for the rest of the season … Do keep him in your prayers …

I hope you are encouraged by this weeks happenings and many thanks for all your ongoing prayers and support ….

Next week; with the U.S. Open there is no opposing event on the ET, so a week at home …

Logos on Tour at the Irish Open

This is the first of our six months of European based trips and one was very much at home in being able to drive to Dublin from Ballymena, no planes this week …

The ‘home’ based events are those where we look to have an ‘open’ public meeting 2/3 times a year and this duly happened through the kind help of Paul Davis and the CBMC [Connecting Business & Marketplace to Christ] organisation …. We had a room at the Lucan Spa Hotel and around 30 people there of which Paul reckons there were 10 non-believers … It was also good to see a caddy (we’ve had chats previously) coming along and Paul had a good chat with him …

The format is always plain and simple; little intro from me on Logos’ role on the Tour and an interview with Hennie [Otto] then open things up to a Q&A time from the floor …. All went well …

You’ll recall I mentioned one of the caddies from SA, Jason, whom I was thinking something had happened with, well he asked for another little chat again, ‘like we had last time,’ so we’re meeting up next week at Wentworth, do pray for that ….

With no JB Kruger or Jake Roos on tour this year it is back to me and Hennie so I’d ask for some big prayers for a move of the Spirit on the tour, from the; publicity, fame, adulation, money, pampering etc to a sense of reality where those involved see outside the bubble that is the European Tour …

‘Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and then all these things will be given to you as well.’ Matthew 6:33

Logos on Tour in Morocco

If you were making up a name for a player in a Jesus based movie then, Christian Heavens, would be looked upon as a little overboard, not so, he was out in the first group on Friday, a young black American and raring to go, but no happy ending as he missed the cut comfortably …. The Morocco Open always invites the winner of the USA golf reality show ‘Big Break’ to play in the event, so the showbiz angle isn’t entirely random …

As is often the way the smaller events prove more susceptible to meaningful ‘Godincidence’ meetings … I met up with up a few times with our recently saved caddie, who is doing really well and keeps in touch regularly from the Tour by What’s App and is a strong witness to others as he gushes forth the new found joy of Jesus in his life…

It was good too meet up again, as in China, with a player and his Dad who is caddying for him, and he is enjoying delving into the truths of Gods word in Matthew, he has found it enlightening just how much you glean from simply reading the word, without additional commentaries and the like ….

I had a long chat with our caddy friend and he was full of questions that he and his friends had been discussing, it’s always interesting to see how myths appear through lack of familiarity with Gods word; On this occasion it was dates and times and they were under the impression that December 25 was in the bible to be celebrated as His birth, I explained it was purely a date selected by man and not a date chosen by God to mark the birth of Christ … interesting discussions prevailed …

Previously I have mentioned numerous caddies, I met up with one, a former caddy, who now has a new position is the front man for the “Green Book” which gives a detailed layout of each green at the tournament, and widely used by players/caddies, it looks as if he will be joining the SMS team as John Whyte looks to expand the numbers due to the addition of more events on the Tour schedule … Been an interesting time with Mark and I am still certain he is there for eternal reasons and not just the thrill of travel and seeing various countries …
Continue to pray for this caddy and the ongoing opportunities I have to talk of the things of God to him …

Beginning with the Irish Open, the week after next. The European Tour will be in Europe!! for the rest of the summer through to late October …

Dunhill Championship Leopard Creek, South Africa

Dunhill Championship Leopard Creek Sth Africa Dec 08 – 13Logos on tour Leopards Creek South Africa

After the end of season European leg of the tour sabbatical it was back to SA and the two week December trip, this was reduced t one due to the lack of a sponsor for the Nelson Mandela event, so it was off to Kruger National Park at Leopard Creek, a “park” the size of Wales!

We had the Bible Study on Wednesday at 7am, outdoors on the veranda in 23 degrees and with 18 in attendance …. Oh! For the day when we have 18 at the Study in Europe …. Andrew Georgiou who is the organising Pro was a little taken aback when he asked for the usual text to be sent out to all the players informing them of when the Study was taking place, the SA secretary was fine, but the European refused to entertain the notion of informing the European based players, you can see there is a way to go yet …. Study was excellent with many contributing and also a couple of non believers there …..
I had a couple of extended chats with an old caddie friend who was in his usual animated form …. The caddies always wear shorts on the tour and I advised him to wear long trousers as he tripped himself up so much that his knees were getting badly skinned, he enjoys the banter …. The last “discussion,” a very loose term with him giving off that God changed His mind, so I asked him, “Why would someone who knows everything have to change His mind?”  Furrowed brow and silence was the answer from him ….
It’s always good to renew acquaintance after a little break from the tour [6 weeks] and everyone greets you as if they hadn’t seen you for years, rather endearing really .
Many thanks for your prayers, encouragement and support through 2104 and I wish you Gods presence over the Christmas and New Year holidays and into 2105 …
“You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”  Psalm 16:11

Scottish Open at Royal Aberdeen

Scottish Open Royal Aberdeen GC July 8 – 10

Memorial Service – Tuesday NightPhil Mickelson at the Scottish Open Ian Poulter playing an unusual bunker shot

As I have said often you never quite know what’s coming up with Tour folks, and I was ready for whatever was to come, good job …

The talk was to precede the charity cricket match at around 5.45-6pm, and true to form with players and caddies working on the course quite late, and everyone arriving in dribs and drabs, the cricket match went ahead before the memorial …. Then come the end of the cricket match at 9.30, the World Cup semi-final was allowed to get to half-time before the talk, then the auction etc ..

The two caddies who took to do with the arrangements then announced to all at the cricket club; players, tour officials, caddies, the other cricket team and actually any others who were there who had nothing to do with what was going on that the TV was going off and the memorial went ahead …. They are a scream really; when they act they act …

Quite amazingly, everyone there listened intently … and it was clear just how fresh the sudden death of Mac had impacted them and the pain was clear to see …

So many thanks to all for your encouraging messages and prayers … God had His way

Christ Embassy Meeting – Wednesday Night

Lee Vannet, club pro and believer in Aberdeen kindly arranged a time for a Logos talk during the normal Wednesday night meeting of his church … This may well be the beginning of a relationship that will blossom as the good folks here, mainly Nigerian, are very much into outreach … A warm and friendly welcome and blessing was had … many thanks Lee ….

As I often say, all things on tour come in little steps, but the memorial served up a bigger step and several people who were there made a point of coming up to me in the week to have a chat … this was the case with a caddie, we had a full and frank discussion for an hour and a half in the middle of the driving range and it caused me to remind myself that it is so important to realise that unsaved people are both spiritually blind and deaf, if we came into contact with someone who was physically blind and deaf then we’d make a lot of allowances for them, so do put this caddie in your prayers …

A good week was had and I’m meeting up with Ricky Gray and Vincent Brown, the two club pros in the Glasgow area, over the weekend to plan something for Ryder Cup week in September …

Next week; The Open in Royal Liverpool, having a right Royal time at the moment

French Open 2014

France Open Versailles Paris July 01 – 03french open 2014 french open 2014-1

France does it again …. After the last years debacle there was a plane delay on the way back for two and a half hours in Paris, missing the next connection and so a night spent in the joys of Luton airport …

The week went well and it was good to meet up with those who are involved with the memorial  (Memorial service; 5:45pm Tuesday July 8)  for “Mac” the caddie in Aberdeen …. It turns out that they are asking me to take the whole service and I shall also do the eulogy on info passed on from them and others.  Mac’s close friends say that they will find it too emotional to speak, but there will be an open time for anyone to say a word or two on Mac.

I had a great long chat with a caddie, who is beginning to hang around more rather and listen, than the ducking & diving he is renowned for … His topic this week was the Jews and why they are seen the way they are and why they are so dispersed, so it was good to be able to look into this with him from “You will become a thing of horror, a byword and an object of ridicule among all the peoples where the LORD will drive you.”  (Deut 28:37) He was duly struck that the answers are all in the Word…

I asked that you pray for a SMS colleague who was in a bad way with, as we thought, kidney stones last week.  Turns out that it isn’t stones but failures in the kidney itself, which they are still looking into to find out just what is causing this, do keep John in your prayers ….

Do Pray for the Memorial service; 5:45pm Tuesday July 8 …
