BMW PGA Championship Wentworth – May 24th & 25th 2017

BMW PGA Championship Wentworth – May 24th & 25th 2017

I have often said of this event – which has become bigger and bigger over the years and is now worth a whopping €7 million –  it can be something of a circus where doing any Logos-ing is lost in amongst the razzmatazz of all that goes on around the tournament.

I have to say that this time around, due to the Christians in Sport/Logos situation there were some meaningful meetings with those involved in this,  which included SMS inc who have linked in with Logos these last eight years. Doubtless there will be a transition which shall be full of trials and errors, teasing out things and much prayer.

An old friend was there this week and had one of his chronological questions about how Herod seemed to have been in two or three places at one time in the gospels. Having explained to him that it is a title, opposed to just one persons name, he has gone away to read the passage where this ‘anomaly’ appeared,  so we’ll await him next time around.

I did meet up with the two believers in the field there; Hennie who is playing on a medical exemption which gives him eleven starts only this season – He continues to work with the Living Ball Foundation in SA and other parts of Africa, a charity to kids, God moved him and others to start.  Dean Burmeister brought his young family with him this week from SA, and he is looking forward to some good results through the summer.  Both are well and enjoying God.

With the Manchester bombing happening this week, this was a topic of conversation which brought lots of opinions and evoked emotional responses. A photographer, several of the journalists in the media centre, caddies/players galore and and the Tour marked this with a minutes silence and the wearing of black ribbons and in the end I reminded all who proffered remedies for the perpetrators that;

“ .. each of us will give an account of himself to God.”  Romans 14:12

Next week; the Scandinavian Masters in Malmo Sweden …

This event is one of the co-sanctioned tournaments where half the field come from the main Tour and the other from the Challenge Tour so it has a big incentive for the winner of a two season exemption and many will fancy their chances for it is, in the context of the Tour, a weaker field than normal …Weaker, at their level, being a relative term!

This is always an event where I catch up with many players/caddies who have been on the main stage and are now back in division two [Challenge Tour] and such was the way this week … A few Nth Ireland folks were around;

A caddie from Antrim whom I came across in South Africa earlier in the winter and have met up with since when at home … He is not going to continue caddying as with a ten year old daughter reckons he needs to be at home … he attends Catholic mass regularly and it has been good to talk to him about Jesus …

The coach from Greenacres whom I have come across over the last few years as he coached, one or two other Irish players but is now based at home …. He was out caddying/coaching this week with a young pro from Moyola Park, who is on his second season in the pro ranks – interestingly I did some coaching with this pro when he was in first and second year at Magherafelt High school, when he was starting out in golf …

It was good to catch up with them and one or two others that I haven’t seen for a while – although in all it was a fairly quiet week, with no official hotel or transport everything and everyone was rather spread out around Portimao and beyond …

Please continue to pray for the SA caddie, he is in Asia this season caddying and currently in Japan for four weeks .. I am in touch with him regularly and as you can imaging life is a little isolated for him in this part of the world …

As a reminder; this Thursday [18th] I’m meeting up with the Christians in Sport people who are taking over Logos from the 1st of June … Some prayer needed there!

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”  Isaiah 30:21
