British Masters at The Grove London October 11 – 13, 2016

This is fast becoming a rival to the PGA Championship at Wentworth and The Open for razzmatazz with Sky Sports as its ambassador who give 20000 free tickets on ‘Sky Day Thursday’ and have all sorts of player/celebrity whooplah on a daily basis and ten hour uninterrupted TV coverage each day … Strangely they didn’t interview me?!

A good week where I met up on one-to-one with;
Ashun Wu; this is his final event in Europe and he’s found it a bit tricky and is glad to be going back to China as it is a little ‘foreign’ to him here, with all the unusual food? As always he was genuine and forthcoming and looking forward to getting back to his family and their family church in Shanghai …

Ben Hayden; who works at the European Tour offices in Wentworth and he and I manage to catch up with when he is at some of the British events … Ben was back from three weeks at the Ryder Cup and as ever we had an in depth talk about matters spiritual and how we should be seen as distinctive in our walk with God ….

I also came across on the range Mike Walker (coach to Danny Willett among others) whom you’ll recall I’ve had a few chats with and he is always probing and his angle this time was ‘Is what you do really a psychology role making players feel better?’ So a good chat ensued about the mind on a human level and the ‘mind of Christ’ 1 Corinthians 2:16 … Do put Mike on your prayer list as he knows about the Way, but doesn’t know Him as yet …

At this event I always come across our old friend Mark Pinney who lives close by, and I had the pleasure of a two night stay with his family and much appreciated their kind hospitality …

As the 2016 season nears its end, mind you the final tournament is week beginning November 21 and the 2017 starts week beginning November 28, not a long off-season? Just to say how much I appreciate all your prayers, emails of encouragement and support throughout the year …

Yours thankfully

Dunhill Links Championship
St Andrews
October 5 – 7, 2016

yrrell-hatton-winning-the-dunhill-at-st-andrewsThe Dunhill, every second year, follows the Ryder Cup and half of the Europe team raced back from the USA to take part alongside their long-time amateur partner’s … I guess the travel and turmoil of the Ryder Cup took its toll as only three made the cut and Masters champion Danny Willett didn’t, although his caddie, who was his playing partner for the week wasn’t so affected and they won the team prize, one up for the caddies …

This is always a very popular tournament, if a bit fragmented, with three courses in use, but I did manage to meet up with our media-man fiend and believer Mike from SA for a good long chat about the things of God and what He was doing with him … and had another long talk about what God was doing in the life of a putting coach, whom I come across three/four times a season with this week being one of his brief forays on the Tour ….

SA has a good turnout in the Dunhill due to the connection with the company’s owner Johan Rupert and amongst those playing were Dean Burmeister [whom I met up with] and JB Kruger, they did find it a little chilly compared to the SAs Dunhill version at Leopard Creek, in Kruger National Park where the temperature will be in the high thirties in December [and Logos make me go to this!] …

Also spent a couple of hours with Logos friends and supporters, the Glasgow’s, who live in St Andrews show us generous hospitality year on year …

Next Week; The British Masters at The Grove, near London …

“Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high.
My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God;
On behalf of a man he pleads with God as one pleads for a friend.”
Job 16:19-21

All your intercessions go through Him, and I am grateful for them all …

KLM Dutch Open Spijk GC Rotterdam Netherlands Sept 6 – 8, 2016logos-on-tour-in-holland-joost-luiten

I informed you last week that the SAs would be gone for the rest of the season, but what do I know … Out of the blue, Dean Burmeister received an invite, he was back in SA, but made his way to Holland with his dad [believer] on the bag, then Jake Roos who was 28th reserve at the weekend and ready to go home, decided to hang on and lo and behold got in at the last minute on the first day as the current Dutch Open champion, Thomas Pieters, had to withdraw … Had JB Kruger hung around he’d have got a game too, but he’d returned to SA to play in a Sunshine Tour tournament at his home course ….

We had a super little study on the porch of the Players Lounge, and as well as those mentioned above, Mark came along … You’ll be well aware of the journey with Mark and this was the first time he’s dipped his toe in the water of a study, so that was terrific … An interesting sideline is that because the area we met in was so busy a couple of caddies and players mentioned to me the next day that they were nearly in the bible study by mistake, and proceeded to chat about God and the bible, so I shall keep them in mind for further ‘impromptu discussions??’

I managed to spend a couple of hours with Mark on the Wednesday evening also and he recognises there is clearly something missing in life, as yet he doesn’t see who, more of a what, do keep on bringing him before God ….

Been a good few weeks in Europe with the SAs and studies each week … Next week I see Ashun Wu is returning and Nick will be on duty with the Courtesy Cars, so do ask God for openings there ….

European Masters
Crans Sur Sierre Switzerland
Aug 30 – Sept 01, 2016
Logos on tour in switzerland

As ever the mountains of Crans Montana were resplendent and combined with the summer sunshine, well, if it wasn’t that a cup of coffee cost £6.00 it’d be great…

I was aware that JB [Kruger] was in the field this week, having qualified through the Asian route, but to my surprise Jake Roos was there too, not playing, but as he has friends in the town, he thought he’d take the opportunity to combine the possibility of getting into the field, though only third reserve, and a few days of a busman’s holiday ….

I met up with them together and then Jake separately as he was keen to have a chat on where he was at regards, where to play, what path to take etc …. These golfers are not all as confident as they appear … It has been a good little oasis of three weeks with the SA believers and I know that’s the last I’ll see of them until early next season [November this year] in SA – do remember them before God…

It has been interesting these last few events that there has been each week three or four prolonged chats with; players, caddies, coaches, physios and others where the subject has been what is happening with them and what is going on in their lives … It isn’t only the players whose futures are uncertain depending on how they are playing but the knock on affect for those in and around the tour …

Pray for these to continue as they will in his time lead to even deeper heart topics concerning eternity and Mike in particular, a coach who is always quick to bring God into things ….

In our studies this week we reminded ourselves that to God we are;
“.. His treasured possession” and “…The apple of his eye”

Deuteronomy 7:6 & 32:10
Always good to recall that He ‘rejoices over us with singing’ Zephaniah 3:17

Next Week; Holland or is it the Netherlands, one of those two …

Made in Denmark Aalborg August 23-26 2016

Logos on Tour in Denmark

Another good week at the very popular Made in Denmark tournament, with has set itself up as a vibrant event with almost 90,000 spectators over the week …

The same suspects attended the study as last week; Jake, Dean, JB and I’m pleased to say Nick came along again …. We stayed with a similar theme as last in dwelling at Christ’s feet, this time going a little further and looking at meditating on His word and thinking on ….
‘Be holy, because I am holy’ 1 Peter 1:16, Leviticus 11:45 & 19:2, with the thought that this might help to concentrate the mind … The question was asked, “How holy is it possible for us to be?” Various answers came in, I think the answer is; as much as we allow the Holy Spirit to take over our lives …. Great to see everyone being very open with prayer request also, more good times …

Some of you may recall the player (a Scottish Professional) [I know there are many of you who prayerfully continue over the years to remember those God has laid on you]

He played on the Challenge Tour seven years ago when I was there for a season, he made it up to the ET where he spent two terms before falling back to the Challenge which is where he is still .. He has played these last two weeks and was telling me that his motivation for CT is waning, he’s only played 5/6 events this year and unless something turns dramatically then he is looking at buy into a fish business, or similar, in and around where he lives … He has a family with two children now and the expense of the second tier tour has drained those earnings from the ET dry … The quality on the CT is only a little below the top echelon (over half the field each week will has tasted main tour golf) and it is monetarily and travel wise a long way behind …. He is one of the many who way outnumber those few who can maintain the standard required to keep their playing rights….

I had a couple of other prolonged conversations with those who were reflecting on life on the, what appears from a distance, glamorous ET but in reality is still a place of uncertain employment for many ….

Next Week; the mountains of Switzerland

Logos on Tour at the Czech Masters

This was one of those weeks that is a gem in the midst of the season; with Jake Roos, JBe Kruger and Dean Burmeister all playing and then Nick the Courtesy Car man coming along also to the bible study …. We dwelt on that wonderful piece on Mary sitting at the feet of Jesus [Lk 10:38-42] and Christ saying that was the ‘better part’ and we mulled over the possibilities we miss when we do the Martha role instead of what Jesus says is the ‘one thing is needed’ ….

I came across on the plane and courtesy car with player Ross McGowan, so his ear was bent from Gatwick to Prague and then when arriving at the course I bumped straight into the three believers mentioned and then Nick, good times …

I had extended chats with; Jake, who has had six months away from the game and is now back refreshed, Ian a physio I’ve mentioned previously who was dwelling on his role on the tour and its challenges, Mike a coach whom I told you before was, as he put it, a ‘Sunday school kid’ and ‘knows’ about God, also good lengthy chats with caddies Tim, Jason and Julian … One of those weeks when there was real meat in the conversation …

I have been keeping you up to date with the SA caddie Alex and sadly he fell ill in Finland during the event and has been hospitalised for the last two weeks with an infection and fluid in his lungs, … He had three procedures [one of which was a fairly major op] done on him and is just this last couple of days over the worst and will be released next Thursday and is flying home then …. Do remember him as his player Michael Palmer is also going back to SA and they shall start anew over the Sunshine Tour season after a rather disappointing year on the Challenge tour … What was really inspiring was to see Alex’s dependency on the great physician, his father God all through his time in hospital ….

The same three players will be in Denmark next week and Nick also, do pray for a breakthrough from acknowledgement of, to faith in Christ for him …

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered. “You are worried and upset about many things. But only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better. And it will not be taken away from her.”  Luke 10:41-42

Scottish Open Castle Stuart GC Inverness July 5 – 8, 2016

Logos on Tour at the Scottish Open

This is the first of three events in Scotland over the next five week spell [with two blank weeks], a time of the year when traditionally there has been a big tournament each week, but the Olympics has caused a stir and reduced the schedule, although that doesn’t appear to be the main reason for the glut of withdrawals from the athletic showpiece, Golf and the Olympics?  The juries still out …

We had one of our ‘Roadshows’ at Inverness; at the Culloden [site of yet another Scottish defeat from our friends from England] Baptist church nearby the course … On this occasion, with Hennie out through injury, Ben having to work and Ashun Wu required for media duties it was me the poor people had to put up with for an hour or so … There was a fine turnout of over 40 people and all went well ..

It was good to meet up with Ashun and he is very keen to study and get together as often as possible, his English is also rather good … Also great to have a chat with Ben and with the lack of believers currently on the Tour, terrific to be in touch with those who are …

The annual charity cricket match; Players/Caddies v Helensburgh CC was played at Inverness CC, this was the event I had the opportunity to do the memorial talk for the caddie ‘Mac’ who died on the course in Madeira two years ago, and it was good to go along and mill around and needless to say with ‘Mac’ being synonymous with this event his memory was a topic of conversation …

BMW German Masters Laerchenhof GC Dusseldorf June 21 – 23,2016

I’m going through a being delayed longer and longer period with flights; from tow bars going through under carriages and so having to change planes to our friends the French air traffic controllers causing a five hour delay … I’m not flying again until mid-August, hopefully the boats to and from Scotland will be more punctual  …

Logos on Tour In Gwemany

Good week in Dusseldorf though; met up with a caddie, we had a long chat over his thoughts on the ‘Roadshow’ he attended in Lucan at the Irish open, God is clearly moving with him …. Keep praying

I also got together with our new Chinese believing player Ashun Wu and he is keen to meet up as often as possible and will come along to our upcoming ‘Roadshow’ at Inverness for the Scottish Open … It is always uplifting to see someone who is ready and willing to seek and serve God …

I recall that many of you prayed for a caddie who gave up the role 18 months ago to get a more financially secure job back home, well he is back for three weeks and he is hoping for more … So it was good to meet up with him again, and as always he was asking about how things were with my role on Tour …

The Tour takes an unusual turn over the next couple of months with the Olympic inclusion of the sport causing a re-shuffle of timings for the Open and USPGA and a couple of blank weeks in mid-summer, which is very odd … mind you with the never ending stream of players withdrawing from the Olympics [Rory & G Mac included] I don’t think the problem will arise again as golf is in a trial sport?

Logos on Tour in Austria

I have often mentioned that the less grand events offer more opportunity simply through the lack of the ‘circus’ element that prevails when the big names abound, so attracting the large entourage’s that accompany those occasions  …

So it was here in sun drenched Austria …

It was great to meet up with our Christian caddie and SA player, for an hours chat and study, a most profitable time was had … I also met up with JB Kruger separately … There really is nothing like dwelling in the word of God is there ….

The bus journeys back and forth from the course were equally rewarding with good talks and explanations of what I do on Tour with two players, this week I was asked more times than I can remember of late why I was there, it was good to reiterate my role, although having been here 6 years, you’d think they’d all be aware by now, but this illustrates the transient nature of the ET and just how many ‘new’ players, caddies and others there are on the conveyor belt that is the Tour …

My counterpart in the United States, Pete Hiskey of Links Golf Ministries has exhorted me to get in touch with a player, believer and good friend of his, from China, and I managed to track him down this week and pass on greetings from Pete and let him know what we do on the ET … As with all Orientals, he was the epitome of good manners and delighted to have met up, so it’ll be interesting to see where this leads, perhaps I’ll even expand my two word Chinese vocabulary.

On a sadder note, Hennie Otto, is undergoing back surgery for the umpteenth time and is now out for the rest of the season … Do keep him in your prayers …

I hope you are encouraged by this weeks happenings and many thanks for all your ongoing prayers and support ….

Next week; with the U.S. Open there is no opposing event on the ET, so a week at home …
