Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open – July 2017

The Scottish Open – Dundonald Links Irvine July 11 – 13

The ‘Rolex Series’ moves onto its third event in a row [France, Irish >>] on the West coast of Scotland with another €7 million prize fund, rich pickings these three weeks, to be followed by the €10 million Open next week …. Money, money, money – lots of TV coverage and the ‘big guns’ out in force from the USA and all around the world …

These are the times when keeping it simple shines through and as we often look to do when on mainland Britain we had one of our Logos ‘Roadshows’ this week in the host town for the tournament, Irvine …

Fullarton Parish Church, all recently renovated and looking fresh and bright, put on an evening where we had two South African pros on the platform and the evening was hosted by Neil Urquhart, the minister, and I did the MC-ing. Both players enjoyed the chance to speak openly of their faith.

The Q&A time of the evening is always good, and people were able to ask ‘those’ questions of Christians on Tour that they’ve been bursting to know … I have to say these occasions are well received every time we do them and on this occasion there may well be a follow up from Bunkered magazine as Christian journalist, Kenny Crawford, was there taking notes …. Good times!!

Next Week; it’s THE Open – those outside of Britain find it amusing that with all the Open tournaments there are, there’s only one alluded to as THE Open!!

As you know the big tournaments are not Logos friendly as a rule, but who knows what God will surprise us with – I am doing an evening at Leyland GC [home club of Keith Macintosh a past Logos board member] on the chaplaincy role on the tour and doubtless I’ll get too meet up with a few others whom God brings along my path …

Logos on Tour at the Scottish Open

This is the first of three events in Scotland over the next five week spell [with two blank weeks], a time of the year when traditionally there has been a big tournament each week, but the Olympics has caused a stir and reduced the schedule, although that doesn’t appear to be the main reason for the glut of withdrawals from the athletic showpiece, Golf and the Olympics?  The juries still out …

We had one of our ‘Roadshows’ at Inverness; at the Culloden [site of yet another Scottish defeat from our friends from England] Baptist church nearby the course … On this occasion, with Hennie out through injury, Ben having to work and Ashun Wu required for media duties it was me the poor people had to put up with for an hour or so … There was a fine turnout of over 40 people and all went well ..

It was good to meet up with Ashun and he is very keen to study and get together as often as possible, his English is also rather good … Also great to have a chat with Ben and with the lack of believers currently on the Tour, terrific to be in touch with those who are …

The annual charity cricket match; Players/Caddies v Helensburgh CC was played at Inverness CC, this was the event I had the opportunity to do the memorial talk for the caddie ‘Mac’ who died on the course in Madeira two years ago, and it was good to go along and mill around and needless to say with ‘Mac’ being synonymous with this event his memory was a topic of conversation …

Memorial Service – Tuesday NightPhil Mickelson at the Scottish Open Ian Poulter playing an unusual bunker shot

As I have said often you never quite know what’s coming up with Tour folks, and I was ready for whatever was to come, good job …

The talk was to precede the charity cricket match at around 5.45-6pm, and true to form with players and caddies working on the course quite late, and everyone arriving in dribs and drabs, the cricket match went ahead before the memorial …. Then come the end of the cricket match at 9.30, the World Cup semi-final was allowed to get to half-time before the talk, then the auction etc ..

The two caddies who took to do with the arrangements then announced to all at the cricket club; players, tour officials, caddies, the other cricket team and actually any others who were there who had nothing to do with what was going on that the TV was going off and the memorial went ahead …. They are a scream really; when they act they act …

Quite amazingly, everyone there listened intently … and it was clear just how fresh the sudden death of Mac had impacted them and the pain was clear to see …

So many thanks to all for your encouraging messages and prayers … God had His way

Christ Embassy Meeting – Wednesday Night

Lee Vannet, club pro and believer in Aberdeen kindly arranged a time for a Logos talk during the normal Wednesday night meeting of his church … This may well be the beginning of a relationship that will blossom as the good folks here, mainly Nigerian, are very much into outreach … A warm and friendly welcome and blessing was had … many thanks Lee ….

As I often say, all things on tour come in little steps, but the memorial served up a bigger step and several people who were there made a point of coming up to me in the week to have a chat … this was the case with a caddie, we had a full and frank discussion for an hour and a half in the middle of the driving range and it caused me to remind myself that it is so important to realise that unsaved people are both spiritually blind and deaf, if we came into contact with someone who was physically blind and deaf then we’d make a lot of allowances for them, so do put this caddie in your prayers …

A good week was had and I’m meeting up with Ricky Gray and Vincent Brown, the two club pros in the Glasgow area, over the weekend to plan something for Ryder Cup week in September …

Next week; The Open in Royal Liverpool, having a right Royal time at the moment
